Pineapple (Tropical fruits)

Pineapple: the king of travelling fruits

In 1493, Christopher Columbus brings back piña (because it resembles a pinecone) to Spain from Guadeloupe. The English adopt the name pineapple, but the French prefer ananas, derived from nana, which means sweet smelling in the language of the Guarani Indians. Hailed as the “King of fruit because it bears a crown”, by Father Dutertre, a French Dominican monk and botanist in the 17th Century, is made fashionable by Louis XIV and cultivated in French and Dutch greenhouses before crossing the oceans again toward Asia and Hawaii.
